San Leandro Shoreline Restoration

Expert solutions and technical analysis were required to restore the 500+ acre Roberts Landing area in San Leandro, one of the largest open areas remaining along the urbanized shoreline of San Francisco Bay.

ESA worked to plan and help implement a series of habitat enhancements and restorations in the area, formerly the site of an explosives manufacturing facility, restoring tidal action to lands that had been diked off from the bay since the turn of the century and converting an upland dredge disposal site into a managed mudflat used seasonally by shorebirds. Over a 20-year period, the historic Roberts Landing Slough has been restored to full tidal action, enhancing habitat for at least two endangered species, including the formerly absent California clapper rail. The project expanded environmental education and recreational opportunities with public-access trails and interpretive signage, and created a mosaic of habitat types within the enhancement area.

ESA provided all of the environmental documentation and entitlement assistance necessary to implement restoration and public access improvement. Our team continues to monitor restoration progress by measuring and observing vegetation coverage and growth, wildlife use and hydrologic function as well as making marsh management recommendations to improve the area's ecological function.
