The Huntington Library

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens (The Huntington) is a private, nonprofit institution devoted to research, education, and art, with an extensive collection that is accessible to researchers as well as the general public. The Huntington had outgrown its original space—built in 1980—and thus required the design and construction of what is now known as the Steven S. Koblik Education and Visitor Center.
Because it is located near a residential neighborhood, minimizing impacts to the local community was a top priority during construction. To address this concern, ESA helped prepare a Construction Management Plan and a Parking and Traffic Management Plan. We also prepared the Environmental Impact Report, which involved:
• Modifying the existing City of San Marino Historical and Cultural Zone Code regarding the institution’s hours and various activities and replacing a daily visitor cap with a daily vehicle cap
• Obtaining a Conditional Use Permit to allow The Huntington certain exceptions to the code regarding operating hours, outdoor events, and traffic
• Coordinating permitting for the redevelopment of facilities, parking, landscaping, and other improvements within the existing entry complex
