Alameda County School Recycling Program Image

Serving more than 225,000 students, Alameda County's school districts need accurate information in order to successfully implement and monitor district-wide recycling programs.

ESA conducted site assessments and provided technical assistance to numerous schools throughout 14 Alameda County school districts including Hayward Unified, Castro Valley Unified, Fremont Unified, and San Leandro Unified. Our team provided recycling training to more than 300 custodial, administrative, and teaching staff to encourage participation and the successful implementation of district recycling programs. Our assistance has resulted in garbage service level reductions with corresponding increases in utilization of recycling services. There has also been a significant reduction in contaminants (non-recyclable materials) in the recycling stream, yielding higher recovery rates by the hauler, and greater marketability of the collected materials.

More recently, this project has expanded to include developing calculation tools for schools and students to see the greenhouse gas and natural resource consequences when making choices about products, transportation methods, energy, and water conservation.

ESA continues to provide assessments, tracking, implementation, and technical assistance for this successful county-wide schools recycling program.
