Gary Oates Named One of the Bay Area’s Most Admired CEOs

The San Francisco Business Times awarded Gary W. Oates, President and CEO of Environmental Science Associates (ESA), as one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s Most Admired CEOs in the professional services category. The award was presented to Gary on Tuesday, November 15th at a gala celebration where 14 other CEOs were honored, including Gary Rogers, former CEO of Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, who received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement award.

The award honors those CEOs who have made a difference. “Today’s most successful companies are led by CEOs with strong values, vision and integrity,” Mary Huss, publisher of the San Francisco Business Times, said. She acknowledged that the best leaders tend to not take credit for the success of their organization; instead, they share it with the people they lead. Accepting his award, Gary acknowledged his team and the dedication of the entire organization as critical to the firm’s success by saying, “I’ve always believed that one of the best measures of a CEO’s value is the quality of the senior leadership that he or she is willing and able to surround him or herself with.”

Gary celebrated his 30th year with ESA in September. He has been ESA’s President and CEO since 1994 and Board Chairman since 2000. The firm has seen steady growth during his tenure—going from 85 staff in three California offices to more than 340 employee-owners and 14 offices throughout California, Oregon, Washington and Florida. The firm formed its Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 1994, became 100% employee-owned in 2000 and is now one the largest independently-owned environmental firms headquartered on the West Coast.
