ESA’s Chief Engineer, Robert (Bob) Battalio, PE, Appointed to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s Engineering Criteria Review Board

09.10.2013

Environmental Science Associates (ESA), a leading California environmental consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Bob Battalio, PE, has been appointed to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s (BCDC) Engineering Criteria Review Board (ECRB) on July 18, 2013. Bob will contribute Coastal Civil Engineering expertise.

The ECRB is an advisory board that assists the BCDC in evaluating the engineering aspects of projects that require BCDC's permits. The ECRB is made up of eleven professionals in private practice, government, and academia and include structural and geotechnical engineers, geologists, architects and coastal engineers. ECRB members volunteer their time and expertise to advise the BCDC regarding seismic and other engineering issues and to assist applicants in designing projects with appropriate engineering criteria. For more information about ECRB visit http://www.bcdc.ca.gov/ecrb/ecrb.shtml.

Bob has dedicated his career spanning more than 25 years to coastal and estuarine engineering, wetland and creek restoration design, and waterfront civil engineering projects throughout the U.S. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in California, Washington, Oregon, and Louisiana. He was integral to pioneering projects such as the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission’s 1990 San Francisco Bay sea level rise study; effects of coastal sand mining in southern Monterey Bay; FEMA’s 2005 Pacific Coast Flood Hazard Mapping Guidelines; and coastal erosion response to sea level rise for Pacific Institute and the California Ocean Protection Council (2009). Some of Bob’s favorite projects are close to home, including assisting the National Park Service with tidal inlet and shore processes at Crissy Field; working on sand transport and master planning for Ocean Beach; designing a groundbreaking managed shore retreat project at Pacifica State Beach; and leading engineering design for the restoration of thousands of acres of tidal wetlands throughout the San Francisco Bay.

Bob holds a Masters in Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, and is the current Northern California Vice President of the California Shore and Beach Preservation Association. An avid lover of the coast and its waves, Bob is also a member of the Surfrider Foundation.
